Group delivers Thanksgiving meals to Catholic Social Services

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — With a lot of help from her friends, a local resident was able to keep up a Thanksgiving tradition alive, delivering more than 100 turkeys and all the fixings to Catholic Social Services just in time for Thanksgiving.

For the 12 straight years Debbie Schwoebel and her friends have delivered turkeys and all the fixings to Catholic Social Services just before the Thanksgiving holiday. Schwoebel said she started donating to Catholic Social Services as part of the Fairhope Lions Club and when she left the Lions Club, they were able to keep it going with the help of friends, many of whom were still a part of the Lions Club.

“I’m just grateful to get to donate this year,” Schwoebel said.

They always get 100 turkeys donated through a local supplier, she said, but when the supplier wasn’t able to donate this year, they were left scrambling to get the turkeys donated from private individuals.

“We rallied together and met our goal,” she said, “… and exceeded to 112 complete Thanksgiving dinners.”

Schwoebel said the turkeys were delivered in six separate shipments earlier while all the sides, including boxed dressing and canned goods with gravy and a variety of vegetables for a complete Thanksgiving meal, were delivered on Nov. 23.

Schwoebel said she wanted to give a special thanks to Barbara Casey, The Lions Club, Snowball Owens, the McKean family, the Robinson family, Dykes Vet Clinic, Dr. Brandy Adams, DMD; Frank and Carolyn Cash, Rick Jones, “and especially to Catholic Social Services for all they do.”

“I just feel like it’s our responsibility to make sure as many people as possible are able to enjoy a good Thanksgiving meal like we can,” Schwoebel said. “I’ve been able to keep it going with the help of friends and others who have donated.”

Schwoebel said she begins gathering donations for next year’s Thanksgiving soon after this Thanksgiving is over and welcomes any and all who wish to donate. If you’re interested, contact Schwoebel at 251-402-3785.
