LOXLEY — At least one life has been lost when a charter bus carrying high school students from Texas ran off the road near the Wilcox exit of Interstate 10 Tuesday morning.
According to a release issued by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, at 5:33 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, a tour bus carrying students from Channelview, Texas, was traveling west on Interstate 10 when it left the roadway, traveled into the median and down an embankment. The crash occurred approximately three miles east of Wilcox near the 57 mile marker.
More than 20 people were injured in the crash, according to reports, with at least one death. There were 52 people on board the bus at the time of the crash, according to reports, including students and teachers.
The deceased has been identified as the bus driver, Harry Caligone of Houston.
Emergency response personnel from multiple agencies are on the scene. Injured passengers have been transported to various local hospitals in Baldwin County as well as Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
