Rev. DuWayne Vernon Winters

Rev. DuWayne Vernon Winters, 78, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 12:47 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2017, at his home.

Born Nov. 13, 1938, in Rockford, Illinois, he was the son of Lloyd Vernon and LaVona Pearl Sandell Winters. On April 4, 1964, he married Eunice Rae Scholz in Hastings, Minnesota.

DuWayne started as a tool and die maker at Rockford Crescent Manufacturing in Rockford, Illinois.

In 1977 he became pastor of the First Covenant Church of Bessemer, Pennsylvania and in 1984 he became pastor at Silverhill Covenant Church in Silverhill, Alabama. After leaving the Silverhill church in 1990, he was a prison chaplain for the Alabama Department of Corrections. Following the move to Burlington, he became a member of the First Congregational Church.

He graduated from Harlem High School in Loves Park, Illinois in 1957, Rockford University, Rockford, Illinois in 1961 and North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois in 1979.

DuWayne enjoyed road trips, visiting friends and family across the country and spending time on the beach. He was a voracious reader and a car enthusiast.

With Trust and Obey as a foundational life principal, he loved the Lord, served him faithfully and followed wherever God led.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice of Burlington, Iowa; three daughters, Cynthea (James) Traverso of North Caldwell, New Jersey, Tracey (Bill) Beck of Newark, Deleware, Vanessa (Rev. Michael) Rice of Kingsburg, California; one son, Nathanael Winters of Burlington, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Mark, Jamie and Luke Traverso, Anya, Josiah, Mariah, and Micah Beck, Elijah, Samuel and Naomi Rice, and Owen, Gwen and Lucy Winters; one brother, David (Kathy) Winters Ph.D. of Ypsilanti, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ruthann; and two grandchildren, Ashre and Sameah Rice.

The memorial service for Rev. Winters will be 4 p.m., Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Greenwood Community Covenant Church in Summerdale, Alabama, with Rev. R.H. Simmons officiating.

A time of food and fellowship will be held at Greenwood Community Covenant Church following the service.
