Women build dreams with Habitat for Humanity

Posted

Habitat for Humanity is again help Women raise up other women, and their houses.

The 2019 Women Build in Baldwin County is underway. The Women Build is a program of Habitat for Humanity International that brings more than 17,000 women from across the nation to build sites.

In Baldwin County organizers are looking for teams of up to seven people (men can come too) to help raise $100,000 for the build and then commit to at least one day on the job site. Teams can still sign up and donations are still being collected.

New this year, women who don’t have a full team to enter with can volunteer on their own. Habitat organizers will find a team to place individuals into.

“We definitely have volunteers without a team that we can help connect,” said Lindsay Avery, director of resource development, Habitat for Humanity of Baldwin County.

Currently there are dozens of families on the waiting list for a home in Baldwin County and the agency receives over 200 calls a year from families in need of housing.

Habitat has built over 150 homes in Baldwin County. The Women’s Build home will be raised in the Cardinal Hills neighborhood in Robertsdale where two other homes have been built this year by Habitat volunteers.

Families who receive Habitat homes are often living in unsafe conditions. Those families undergo financial education, budgeting and counseling to work toward being chosen as a habitat family and then must complete 200 hours of volunteer work on other homes before they are placed on a waiting list to receive their own. Once they are added to that list an additional 200 hours of volunteer work is required before ground is broken on their home.

The homes are not free to recipients. Habitat works with the families to secure loan terms they can afford to pay for the home.

Construction on the Women’s Build home begins Oct. 19 and will be completed in spring of 2020.
