DAPHNE — DHS head softball coach Lawrence T. Yelding notched his 600th career win with a 9-4 victory over Faith Academy in the Robertsdale tournament Feb. 24.

On Thursday, March 8, Yelding was back home on Lady Trojan Field and was recognized with a pre-game surprise presentation and a plaque commemorating his reaching the 600-win plateau. The Trojans then defeated MGM 6-3 for career win No. 605.

“I have been fortunate to have great assistant coaches to work with and we have really been blessed with some very talented young ladies to come through here,” Yelding said. “And you couple that with great parents and an administration that’s in your corner and good things are bound to happen.”

Beginning his 15th season at the helm, coach Yelding is now at 605-281 overall. Since taking over as head coach, the DHS softball teams under his leadership have advanced to regional and sub-state tournaments 11 times. The Trojans have also made it to the state tourney seven times and the state championship twice bringing home the red-map 6A runner-up trophy.

“I can’t say enough about how proud I am to have coached so many excellent student athletes,” he said. “They represent the best that they can be on the field and in the classroom and beyond high school. So, it’s a whole lot of people besides me behind these wins but I’m glad I have been here for it.”

Makenna Pierce got the pitching win over MGM’s Vikings with seven strikeouts. She allowed three hits and one earned run. Kennedy Cronan went 2-4 with a solo homer and the RBI. Anna Turner went 2-4 with a double and RBI, Jessi Stevens went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs while Madeline Hirst and MC Sweatt each added a single and an RBI. Daphne is now at 9-5 overall for the season.
