Daphne, Ala. -- Ten Daphne High student-athletes (four basketball, two volleyball players volleyball, one cheer, one football and one soccer) were recognized for their accomplishment of making collegiate plans to play sports at the next level April 12 at Trojan Hall. Surrounded by family, friends, teammates, Dan Haygood (the Mayor of Daphne), Dr. Meredith Foster (Daphne Principal), Kenny King (Daphne Athletic Director), Daphne Staff, and DHS Athletic Coaches, the athletes signed their letters of intent to officially accept athletic scholarships offered to them by the following colleges/universities:

• Chance Newman (Football) – Virginia Military Institute
o Daphne Head Football Coach, Kenny King on Chance Newman, “I am very
proud of Chance these past few months. He signed with a community college in

February even though his desire was to play Division 1. He stayed humble and
focused and continued to improve during the offseason, and his hard work paid
off in the form of a Division 1 scholarship and I am excited to see him continue to do great things.

“I am very thankful for the opportunity to receive this scholarship and play Division 1 football at Virginia Military Institute. I can’t say thank you enough to my parents, family, coaches, and teammates for helping me to achieve my dream.”–  Chance Newman

• Drake Wright (Basketball) – Coastal Alabama Community College
o “This is a great opportunity for Drake. He came to us from Spanish Fort for only a year and I wish we couId have had him for a few more years. However, we are thankful for the time we did have him and look forward to his success at the next level.” Daphne Head Basketball Coach Cedric Yelding.

o “I want to thank Coach Yelding for helping me on the side and believing in me.

We had some rough times but he has made me into a great basketball player
and a great person.” – Kendrick Buskey

• Davon McMillan (Basketball) – Coastal Alabama Community College
o “Davon is a young man that is good, smart, and a strong basketball player. He is someone whose work ethic helped him through injuries and setbacks to become a very important part of our team and our success. I am very proud of him,” said Daphne High Head Coach Cedric Yelding.

excited to watch her continue her cheer legacy at Coastal.”

o “I want to thank my grandparents for going to every cheer practice and
competition and being at every Friday night game. I would like to thank Coach
Deveney for allowing me to cheer and pushing me to do my best. I also would
like to thank my middle school cheer coach Kara Morris for being more than a

cheer coach to me. I want to thank my mother and friends for always pushing
me.” – Caylen Kidd
