GULF SHORES, Ala. — The 2015 and 2016 seasons have not been easy for the Gulf Shores Dolphins and the Robertsdale Golden Bears high school football teams. With the season closing, Gulf Shores (0-9) and Robertsdale (1-8) wanted to get positive momentum going into the offseason. Both teams were hungry for that last victory, especially for their seniors. But RHS prevailed with a 34-13 win.

Gulf Shores did not have the luxury of wide receiver Brodie Wilkinson, so they turned to Garrett Newman to be their key offensive player. Robertsdale would focus on their star Running Back, Deandre Prim, and their big, aggressive offensive line.

The Dolphins started off the game with the ball but met a quick three and out from the Golden Bears defense. Robertsdale’s first drive attacked with 38 rushing yards for Prim and resulted in a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nate Krebs to Evan Robinson (Extra-point kick was no good) for a 6-0 score.

Gulf Shores’ Jacob Knight returned a kickoff 42 yards to the 38-yard line. The Dolphins got on the board with a 31-yard goal by Adam Callaghan. The first quarter ended with a 9-yard and a 28-yard run by Prim.

The second quarter started with a Golden Bears drive and a 13-yard touchdown pass from Krebs to make the score 13-3. Gulf Shores responded with a 15-yard throw from Luke Murdock to Devon Swainston, a 17-yard pass from Murdock to Newman and a 1-yard TD by Newman to make it 13-10. On RHS’ next drive, Prim rushed the ball 11 times for 65 yards and Robertson caught a 22-yard pass. RHS, however, could not capitalize on the drive with a missed field to end the half.

In the third quarter, the Golden Bears drove downfield on 28, 19 and a-9 yard TD run by Broderick Wilson to make the score 20-10. After 9 plays of trying to push the ball down the field, the Dolphins lined up to punt on 4th down when Jacob McDaniel took the snap and ran for a fake of 28 yards that helped set up a 32 yard field goal from Adam Callaghan to make the score 20-13.

In the final quarter, Prim carried six times (9.83 yds per carry) and capped the drive with a 2 yard TD (27-13). Golden Bears cornerback Jared Krist then picked up a GS fumble for a 20-yard TD return and a 34-13 score. The Dolphins did manage to create a turnover on downs thanks to tackles for loss by Bryce Sims and Donovan Wedgeworth. Bears linebacker Hunter Monte also had a sack to force a turnover on downs.

Gulf Shores finished 2016 at 0-10. Robertsdale finished 2-8. Prim rushed for over 300 yards for RHS with his offensive line creating push against a smaller Dolphins defensive line.

Gulf Shores Dolphins head coach, Jamie Williams, was not happy with the loss but was fortunate to have players that fought until the end. He made his decree that his players will have the best but toughest offseason they will ever see.
