Posted

FOLEY, Ala. – Defending boys’ state champion Spain Park rolled a three-game traditional bowling total of 2,672 to grab the top seed for Friday’s championship round of head-to-head completion at the South Regional Thursday and Thompson clinched the girls’ top seed in a late finish with a 2,399 total Thursday night.
The 2018 AHSAA South Regional Bowling Championships being held at the Gulf Bowl will conclude Friday.  Vestavia Hills (2,594) captured the second seed in the boys’ competition, followed by Thompson (2,576) and Baker (2,556) in one of the most competitive rounds of bowling in the sport’s short history, which is now in its third year as an AHSAA championship sport. Stanhope Elmore captured second seed in the girls’ competition with a 2,233 first-day total.
All 16 teams in the boys’ and girls’ fields will compete in the bracketed head-to-head Baker format competition Friday. The boys get underway at 8 a.m., and the girls start at 11 a.m. The finals are set for 4:15 p.m. Friday. The boys’ and girls’ championship brackets can be found at www.ahsaa.com. North brackets will be updated once the first-day traditional series competition is concluded. The North boys’ and girls’ seeding will be completed with round three Friday morning at 8 a.m. The championship round at Tuscaloosa’ Leland Lanes will follow immediately upon completion.
Stanhope Elmore’s Joshua Wilson turned in the top boys’ three-game series score with a 681. His 267 in the final round and 235 in the second round were the top two rounds of the boys competition. Landon Masters of Thompson rolled 211-233-168—612 for the second best boys’ series of the competition.
Thompson’s Gillian Baker rolled the two best girls’ individual rounds with a 217 in the first game and a 214 in the third game. She did not bowl in the second game and did not get a three-game series score. However, her 431 total in two games placed her 16th overall in the individual series rankings. Beauregard’s Brooke Langley turned in the best three-game series with a 498 total.  Meghan Best of Stanhope Elmore was second with a 489.
