FOLEY, Ala. — Baker High and Auburn High emerged Friday afternoon as the boys’ and girls’ AHSAA South Region Bowling Tournament champions, respectively. The titles were the first in each school’s history.
At the North Regional held at Tuscaloosa’s Leland Lanes, defending state girls’ champion Southside-Gadsden beat Etowah 1,260-1,064 in the finals and Grissom topped James Clemens for the boys’ region title, winning with 1,435. James Clemens was 31 pins back at 1,404.
SOUTH REGIONAL
Baker downed Daphne 725-674 in the finals at Gulf Bowl here to advance to next week’s third annual AHSAA State Bowling Championships at Oak Mountain Lanes in Pelham as the South Regional Champion.
The Hornets beat Auburn 690-592 in the quarterfinals and beat defending boys’ state champion Spain Park in the semifinals 736-689. Daphne reached the finals with a 741-622 win over Thompson in the quarterfinals and beat Vestavia Hills 737-620 in the semis to set up the final match.
NORTH REGIONAL
Grissom was red-hot all day on Friday winning its quarterfinal match over Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, 1,494 to 1,343. The Tigers advanced to the finals beating East Limestone 1,544-1,350. James Clemens beat Buckhorn (1,430 to 1,378) in the semifinals and downing Gadsden City in the quarterfinals (1,382 to 1,320).
Southside beat Pinson Valley 1,295 to 949 in the quarterfinals and Hartselle, 1,179-1,140 in the semis. Etowah beat Sparkman and Capitol School in the semis and quarterfinals, respectively.
All teams reaching the quarterfinals clinched berths in the AHSAA State tourney, set to be played Thursday and Friday, Jan. 25-26.
The AHSAA State Bowling Championships is set for play on Thursday and Friday in Pelham.
