Councils considering Point Broadband agreement

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Robertsdale City Council and the Silverhill Town Council are at different stages of considering an agreement with Point Broadband to provide internet service.

At its morning meeting on Monday, June 19, the Sherry Sullivan with Point Broadband addressed the council about its pending agreement.

“We have been in negotiations with Point Broadband,” said Mayor Charles Murphy, “and we appreciate their working with us in this matter.”

Murphy said he solicited the help of a firm that the city has used in the past when negotiating contracts with other multimedia providers.

At the Monday meeting, he asked Ken Raines, the city’s legal representative, to look over the contract for any legal issues. If there are no problems with the contract, it will be considered for approval at a future meeting, Murphy said.

Sullivan was not present at the Silverhill Town Council meeting Monday night when Mayor Tim Wilson asked the town’s legal representative, Josh Myrick, to look over a possible contract with Point Broadband.

Wilson expressed concerns that the compensation was considerably lower than that of Mediacom, also expressing concerns over whether Point Broadband’s equipment would interfere with Mediacom’s existing equipment on the town’s water tower.

“I’m sure there is a way to put that in the contract if it is not already there,” Myrick said, in addition to negotiating the fee.

Sullivan addressed town council members at a meeting in May, saying the town will also be able to provide two free hot spots for wireless internet service, which could include the Silverhill Community Center, Oscar Johnson Park or Oscar Johnson Memorial Library, officials said.

In April, Todd Holt, CEO of Point Broadband and ITC Holdings, told Gulf Coast Media that the company is expecting to access about 25 towers in Baldwin County over the next four weeks.

In addition, Holt said, they are looking at Bay Minette, Fairhope, Daphne, Robertsdale and Elberta. Holt said the company had a mid-June timeframe for launching service and signing up customers.

Contracts have already been signed with other municipalities, as well as the Baldwin County Commission, North Baldwin Utilities and Belforest. Both Loxley and Summerdale approved 10-year contracts with the company in May.

Also in Robertsdale, the council:

•Approved the use of Honeybee Park for the Central Baldwin Relay for Life event to be held Nov. 3.

•Denied a request from Stephanie Whaley to use Honeybee Park for a 5K fundraiser after Raines expressed concerns that the fundraiser would not be used for a non-profit or school.

• Rescheduled the next City Council meeting to Wednesday, July 5 because the offices will be closed Monday and Tuesday, July 3 and 4 in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

• Approved a plan for E-911 to take over addressing within the city’s corporate limits.

Also in Silverhill, the council:

• Approved Resolution 547-06-19-2017 for Planning & Zoning fee schedules.

• Decided to hold off approving a proposal with Coastal Fitness in Robertsdale to provide service to town employees. Questions were raised as to whether or not members of the volunteer Fire Department and reserve officers with the Police Department could use the services. Plans are to get answers to those questions and to discuss the matter further at a future meeting.

• Voted to close town offices on Monday, July 3 and rescheduled its next council meeting to Thursday, July 6 in observance of the Independence Day holiday.
