Dancing through the days

Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre invites entire community to be part of the show

Trapped inside. Sitting. Waiting.

More than ten days we've been rusting. Needing so much more than dusting. Needing exercise; a chance to use our skills.

Specifically, we need to feel human again.

Reminded of a particular fairy tale?

Last week Erin Langley, executive director of Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre, moved rehearsals online for “Beauty and the Beast,” the company’s 7th annual theatre on the bluff performance.

When they began fine tuning dance moves for the song “Human Again” the words of the Broadway performance felt personal, and familiar, she said.

The tune tells of the moment when the enchanted household items finally believe, and hope, that Belle will break the spell and return them to their human selves.

The characters croon, “When we're human again. Only human again … We'll resume our long lost joie de vie. We'll be playin' again. Holiday' again. And we're prayin' it's A-S-A-P.”

Langley said they are waiting for officials to determine when it will be safe to move forward with the public performance. But when the show finally does go on, Langley has invited the entire community to join the cast in singing and dancing to “Human Again.”

This week she posted a dance tutorial on YouTube. The night of the show, when the song begins, the house lights will lift and the audience will come to life to dance, sing and smile together.

To be, human again.

“I think that it is going to be so important for us to celebrate being a community again and this is the way Eastern Shore Repertory could do that,” she said. “I hope this vision comes to life and we see everybody out there dancing.”
