Farmers Federation Women’s Committee hosts Dawn House residents

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Members of the Baldwin County Farmers Federation Women’s Committee hosted clients from Dawn House of Bay Minette recently at the Farmers Federation facility located behind Alfa in Robertsdale.

“This is a way for us to promote agriculture and agriculture-related crafts,” said Women’s Committee Chair Jennifer Salac.

Dawn House is a residential facility for adults with both physical and mental challenges. The Bay Minette facility is home to five permanent residents with three additional residents currently participating in the Day Program at Dawn House.

“We’re a small-scale facility that provides individual attention to our residents,” said a Dawn House spokesperson. “We will never have more than 12 residents at a time at the facility.”

Through the Day Program, Dawn House provides goals and activities for its residents, including skill training, classroom and on-site amenities. Dawn House also includes a garden facility, which grows a variety of vegetables and other items, officials said.

In addition the Dawn House provides a series of fun outings and activities including library, fishing, bowling, dining out, boating, shopping, zoo and square dancing, among others.

Full-time residents stay at the facility 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while the Day Program operates Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dawn House also provides extended programs during the summer months.

On Monday, May 1, residents visited the Farmers Federation and participated in activities, including making bird feeders from organic and recycled materials and a “Fairy Village” using pots, potted plants and simple decorations.

“It just gives them something to do to get them out and participating in activities,” said Salac, whose son Dusty participates in the program.

Programs for the Dawn House are provided for a small fee, but the facility is a 501C-3 not-for-profit organization and tax deductible donations are accepted.
