A jolt to the Gulf Shores community came to a swift close Monday morning as the suspect in a fatal shooting turned himself in to police.

Shortly after 8 a.m., police and fire were dispatched to Clark’s Exxon in Gulf Shores at the corner of County Road 4 and Hwy. 59 for a gunshot wound call. Sgt. Jason Woodruff of Gulf Shores Police Department said new information came to first responders as they were en route.

“As the units were coming up to the scene, the call got updated that there was a shooter identified and that he was leaving the scene in, I think they said a brown truck,” Woodruff said. “This happened very quick. People got here, they started the medical side of it.”

The 31-year-old male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and first responders put up tarp to shield the public from the scene as well as to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Woodruff said a witness followed the suspect as he left the scene and told police where his vehicle was parked. The shooter himself called police as well.

According to a post on the Gulf Shores Police Department Facebook page, the suspect, Albert Laquentin Smiley, 26, of Daphne, was taken into custody a short time later near Cobb Theatre (3780 Gulf Shores Pkwy) without incident. No other suspects are at large, and there is no further danger to the community.

“The suspect was out of the vehicle and sitting on the sidewalk,” Woodruff said. “The shooter also called police and said, ’this is where i’m located. I’m not armed anymore’ and was taken into custody without incident. There is no other threat to the community.”

Cooperating agencies with the investigation include the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, local fire and EMS.

According to Gulf Shores Police, Smiley will be charged with Murder (13A-6-2). He is currently being held at the Gulf Shores Police Department, where he is awaiting transport to the Baldwin County Jail.

Gulf Coast Media will continue to update this story as more details become available.
