Flora-Bama Mullet Toss, better late than never

Posted

The year of 2020 will be seared into memory for a worldwide pandemic, the cancellation of The Hangout Music Festival and National Shrimp Festival and multiple hurricanes. Thankfully, it will not be the year the mullet was not tossed.

The Interstate Mullet Toss and Beach Party will kick off Oct. 23 at the Flora-Bama. This year the event is an abbreviated version of its annual April event. Families are invited to enjoy a day on the beach for fun, food and festivities.

Have you ever wondered how the Mullet Toss works? Participants throw a mullet from a 10-foot circle in Florida across the state line into Alabama. This year’s event will also feature local celebrities tossing fish at 4 p.m. each day.

The kids toss begins at 10 a.m. and adults at noon, each day, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 23-25, and winners announced at 4:30 p.m. The Miss Mullet Toss bikini contest will be held Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. with over $1,200 in cash prizes.

Entry into the Mullet Toss is free until 6 p.m. and the fee to toss a mullet is $15 and includes a t-shirt. A portion of t-shirt sales go to the Community Drug and Alcohol Council and local Youth Outreach Program. Each year, the Mullet Toss has raised over $40,000 for local charities on both sides of the state line.
