Floyd Morris Gilbert, U.S. Army Colonel (retired), born Feb. 5 1931, died Aug. 28, 2018.

He was born in Mobile, Alabama.

He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Gayleen Gilbert; his son, Steven Morris Gilbert; and his three sisters, Evelyn Hastings, Helen Plato and Alice Duffee of Bay Minette, Alabama.

He is survived by his daughter, Pam Conde (Raul); his son, Tracy (former wife, Jennifer Gilbert); four grandchildren, Carrie Herzke (John), Ashley Miller (Nick), Sarah Bondurant (Aaron) and Aaron Gilbert. He also had six great-grandchildren, Jack, Oliver and Eleanor Herzke and Coleson, Meredith and Max Miller.

He enlisted in the Army in 1948 as a private and retired as a colonel almost 28 years later. He served in various commands and staff positions in Europe and Korea from battalion level to Department of Defense level, including a joint assignment with the Air Force and Navy.

He was a life member of The Retired Officers Association of Hampton Roads, National Retired Officers, Disabled American Veterans; member and past president of National Sojourners, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Khedive Temple, Legion of Honor, Kempsville Masonic Lodge 196 and Eastern Star 173.

He served as director of the Collingwood Library and Museum on Americanism.

In 1997, he received National Sojourners highest award, Legion of Honor. He served on the Committee of 33, as a director of NASOCOCO, and chairing the trustees. He was past national president of Presbyterian Men. Served as moderator of the Presbytery of the Synod Council of the Mid-Atlantic.

He served as an elder and trustee at Providence Presbyterian Church; served on the board of directors at Atlantic Fleet Credit Union and Presbyterian Children's Home of the Highlands and was past president of Membership Senate Mid Atlantic and Virginia Retired Officers and Hampton Roads Veterans Organization.

He served on the Virginia Beach Mayor's Veterans Committee and emceed the Memorial Day program. He was also a volunteer at City Hall in Virginia Beach for many years, as well as a volunteer for Virginia Beach Meals on Wheels and provided transportation for cancer patients.

Viewing will be held on Sept. 7, 2018, from 5-8, at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Norfolk, Virginia. On Sept. 8, 2018, viewing will be held at 10 a.m. with service to follow at Providence Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach at 11 a.m.

The family invites everyone to a celebration of life in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.

Burial with military honors at Woodlawn Gardens will follow the reception, which is open to everyone.
