SILVERHILL, Alabama — Longtime Silverhill resident and former mayor Frankie Kucera will be honored during the 34th Annual Silverhill Heritage Day Festival on April 7.

“He has meant so much to this community over the years,” said festival organizer Gerald Ardoin, “we wanted to do something to show our appreciation to him for all that he’s done for our town.”

Kucera, who grew up in Silverhill, served two terms as mayor from 1976 to 1984 before returning to fill a vacant mayoral seat from July of 2006 to May of 2007. His father also served the town as mayor.

Through the years, Kucera has served the town on various boards, including the Silverhill Library Board and was chairman of the Save the Little Hall Committee.

The Little Hall was thought to be damaged beyond repair by a tornado in 2011, but the group was able to raise funds to move the structure and get it righted.

Kucera and others did a lot of the work on the structure themselves, completing the renovations in December of 2014 and the structure was re-dedicated in January 2015.

For years, through the Gear Jammers car group, Kucera has headed up the annual Memorial Weekend Car Show, held every year on the last Saturday in May, first serving as a fundraiser for the Oscar Johnson Memorial Library.

The show has also served as a fundraiser for the Little Hall and most recently raised funds to erect a memorial to Silverhill area veterans, which was opened in March of last year.

As part of the day’s festivities, Kucera will serve as grand marshal for the annual Heritage Day parade, which will begin at 10 a.m. along Main Street (Alabama 104) and will be honored with a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial, which is located in Paul Anderson Park across from town hall.
