GULF SHORES, Ala. - Few athletes finish their high school sports careers on top. Gulf Shores High School star athlete John Paul Uter finished his high school wrestling career with a 66-4 record in his senior year alone.

He was the 6A all-state champion in the 170-pound weight division this past February. His 7-5 sudden death victory match over Benjamin Russell High School’s Hezekiah Hunter was voted best match in this year’s 6A state finals.

On Friday, July 23, the Gulf Coast Wrestling Officials Associations named John Paul Uter as the 2019-2020 6A wrestler of the year.

Uter has had a highly established athletics career. He finished his football career as the Gulf Shores Dolphins quarterback and safety.

Paul started his wrestling career in the eighth grade for the Dolphins which helped the Dolphins start as a successful, young and productive program. Uter finished sixth place in his freshman year as well as fourth place in his junior season.

After the ceremony for his award, John Paul Uter was asked what focuses on the most when going into a match.

“I just kind of focus on my technique, just try to keep a strict forward mind,” he said. “You don’t want to have too many distractions. You know what you got to do to get it done and trust your training.”

When asked his plans regarding his potential wrestling career in college. Uter said he was going to attend Troy University as a student and then prepare for a potential wrestling career as a walk-on at Auburn University.
