Both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Schools will close to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

On Friday Alabama Governor Kay Ivey officially issued a state of emergency and announced that all K-12 schools in the state would close at the end of the day, March 18 for 2.5 weeks.

Gulf Shores City Schools Superintendent Matt Akin issued a statement to parents shortly after to clarify.

In his message, Akin stated Gulf Shores City Schools will close at the end of the day Wednesday, March 18, and remain closed through April 3. Spring break will continue as scheduled April 6-10 with students returning April 13.

More details will be provided about the learning plan and athletic events in coming days. Schools will be open Monday, March 16, through Wednesday, March 18.

Baldwin County Schools Superintendent Eddie Tyler also emailed parents, including those in Orange Beach Schools.

He said the last day of school in Baldwin County will be upon dismissal Wednesday, March 18. Baldwin County Public School students will be out from March 19 through April 12, which includes the previously scheduled spring break holiday. Students will return to school April 13.

Tyler said the schedule is subject to change and parents will be updated should the governor extend the closure.

Tyler also wrote that Baldwin County will distribute more information in the coming days as the district receives clarification from the State Department of Education and others with regards to curriculum and annual requirements.
