Gulf Shores Lions Club presented the 2020 Hugh Branyon Scholarship Award to Khushi Patel and Tanner Jones of Gulf Shores High School. Patel and Jones were special guests at the Gulf Shores Lions Club’s first meeting in four months July 15.

Willing volunteers at school and in the community, Patel and Jones were touted as leaders by their teachers through their participation in the Lions’ sponsored Leo Club and many other clubs at school.

Patel was president of the National Honor Society, treasurer and vice president of Leo Club for two years, philanthropy chair for International Club, and officeholder in Student Government and Peer Helpers at Gulf Shores High School. She was on the bowling team and has volunteered extensively in the community for most of her life.

“Not only has being a part of clubs at Gulf Shores High School help me realize how much helping others means to me, they have taught me about leadership, commitment, organization, and have helped build my character as a whole,’’ Patel said.

“Khushi helps me not only with International Club, but also with Peer Helpers. She is an asset to this invaluable organization, always volunteering to jump in and help a fellow classmate or student in need,’’ said Amanda Talantis, a teacher and adviser at Gulf Shore High School.

She plans to attend Auburn University and major in biomedical sciences with the end goal of becoming an emergency room physician.

“Through my internship at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center, I have fallen in love with helping others from a medical standpoint as well, and hope to continue doing that as my future career,’’ she said.

A captain on the Gulf Shores High School football team, Jones was also a state final qualifier in track, in the National Honor Society and Jesus Club.

He plans to attend Coastal Alabama Community College and then Troy University to study nursing and social studies in hopes of being a positive influence on others.

“I am a very modest person who loves to see the positivity in everything to work smoothly,’’ he said. “By having positive and influential energy, everything is powerful enough to create success and wellness in life.’’

“Jacob always seems to lead by example in the classroom and does not conform to others. He is true to who he is, which I believe is very important in today’s society,’’ said Ashley Watley, the social studies chair at Gulf Shore High School. “He has a kind heart and always has a smile on his face,’’ she added.

“They both did a great job telling us about their past volunteer work in the community and with the Leo's, as well as, their future endeavors,’’ said Gulf Shore Lions Club president, Chris Coaker. “They have very bright futures.’’

The Gulf Shores Lions Club will continue to meet while adhering to current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at noon at the Gulf Shores Adult Activity Center. The club’s next fundraiser is the Oct. 9 Golf Tournament at The Peninsula. For more club info, contact Coaker at 251-228-2254  or chriscoaker98@gmail.com.
