FOLEY, Ala. — Kelsey Canan has been recognized for her track and field performance. The Gulf Shores High School graduate was named the Southern States Athletic Conference women's field freshman of the year.

The University of Mobile standout won the javelin at the conference championship, resulting in her being named to the all-conference first team. She was 11th in the shot put. Canan's best performance in the javelin prior to the conference championship was her second-place finish at the University of Mobile Invitational.

BASEBALL

The Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) head coaches named Spanish Fort High School graduate Mike Farnell to the all-state first team. The sophomore catcher hit .380 in 40 games. He led the team with 10 home runs and ranked second with 36 runs batted in. Farnell, who has committed to play for Murray State University, batted .125 in two games for the Fayetteville Swampdogs of the summer Coastal Plain League.

• Itawamba Community College pitcher JT Salter was named to the MACJC all-state first team and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 second team. The Baldwin County High graduate was 7-2 with a 3.31 earned run average in 14 appearances. Bound for University of Alabama, he led the team in ERA and tied for the lead in wins. He was the MACJC and NJCAA pitcher of the week during May.

• University of Montevallo's Ryan Brooks hit .256 in 12 games for the Madisonville Miners of the Ohio Valley League. His 12 RBIs ranked second on the team. He also played for the Toros.

• Pitcher Andrew Mahoney, a Daphne resident, had nine relief appearances for Mississippi State University. He was named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team. Mahoney prepped at McGill-Toolen Cathoic.

•Gulf Shores alumnus Brandon Davis batted .233 in 47 games for Auburn University at Montgomery. He had 29 RBIs, which tied for second on the squad.

• Troy University freshman pitcher Will Carnley had no record and a 1.42 ERA in eight outings. The right-hander competed for Robertsdale High.
