Possible renaming of County Road 8

Posted

One of Gulf Shores’ most traversed streets north of the canal may soon be getting a new name.

At its most recent City Council work session, Gulf Shores discussed changing the name of

County Road 8 East to Coastal Gateway Boulevard.

With the annexation of the areas on both sides of County Road 8 east and

the City taking over maintenance, City staff determined County Road 8 should be renamed as a city road. City staff developed a list of names as well as surveyed residents via Facebook, and the recommended name is Coastal Gateway Boulevard. Baldwin County 911 agency has confirmed Coastal Gateway Boulevard is an approvable name.

Also discussed at the work session were:

-A budget amendment which would increase general fund expenses by $35,000 from 2018 Amendment 2, which was passed last month.

-Authorize staff to pursue BUILD Grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation for construction of the Waterway Village Multi-Modal Access Project. Components of the project will include a new road connecting HWY 59 to the proposed state bridge east of the airport, a major pedestrian bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway, improvements to the Aviation and Business Park, new connections from HWY 59 to the City’s future medical complex, the addition of a third southbound lane across the HWY 59 bridge to Clubhouse Dr., improvements to W. 36th Ave., a new connector road from W. 36th Ave. to Waterway West Blvd., improvements to

East 20th Ave. and HWY 180 (W. Canal) from HWY 59 to the FBE, and streetscape and parking improvements throughout the Waterway Village District. The proposed improvements will provide regional connectivity between HWY 59, the new state bridge and spur road, the Foley Beach Express, Jack Edwards Airport, the Aviation

and Business Park, the Waterway Village canal waterfront and mixed-use business districts, and residential areas in Gulf shores.

-Accepting a proposal from Volkert in the not to exceed amount of $73,361 (9.7% of the estimated construction cost). The proposal would provide professional services for constructing a road across newly acquired 40-acre tract on Co. Rd. 8 East and perform County Commission requested traffic impact study and warrant analysis for Co. Rd. 8 and Foley Beach Express signal.

-Authorizing staff to pursue funding from Homeland Security Grant Program for purchase of barriers: fences; jersey walls for special operations or events. The City of Gulf Shores has become a host to numerous special events. With the need to direct and funnel more and more pedestrians into safe areas away from traffic at these events, GSPD would like to apply for a grant to purchase barricades to separate pedestrians and vehicular traffic. If secured, the grant would provide funds for the purchase of the barricades at no cost to the city.
