Quilting group pools resources for Texas hurricane victims

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — When you think of items needed for hurricane victims, a warm blanket might not be the first thing on your list, but thanks to a group of quilters in Central Baldwin County, survivors of Hurricane Harvey in Texas will have just that.

“We heard that the (First Baptist Church in Robertsdale) was organizing an effort to send food and other supplies to Texas and we thought it was something we could do to help out,” said Tina Morgan with the Stitch-N-Friends sewing group.

Every year, the group supplies quilts to veterans and active service members through the national Quilts of Valor program. The quilts provide not only an essential need of warmth, but also comfort through a traumatic experience.

“So we thought, why not do the same thing for the victims in this tragedy,” Morgan said.

In just a few short days, word was sent out through the members of the club and 48 quilts were collected. The donations were included in supplies which were sent to Cypress, Texas, on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Morgan said the group planned to send another set of quilts when the church made a return trip to the area on Sept. 7 and will continue to make and accept donations of quilts as long as supplies are being sent to the area.

“We have several members who have quilt patterns that can be made quickly,” she said, “mainly baby and twin sized quilts, but if anyone has a quilt of any size they want to donate, we will be happy to accept it.”

Morgan said donations are being accepted, including fabric and batting, preferably 100 percent cotton, along with thread and other needed items.

“Of course, we will accept any donations that anyone is willing to give,” Morgan said.

Additional items being collected for the victims in Texas include:

•To-go containers with compartments.

•Plastic cups (3,000, 16 or 20 ounce).

•Concentrated sweet tea and lemonade.

•Pre-wrapped utensil kits (3,000).

•Paper towels.

•Aluminum foil sheets.

•Cleaning products (wipes, cleaning spray, disinfectant spray).

•Canned goods (commercial size preferred).

•English peas, green beans and whole kernel corn.

•Rice.

•Chicken and beef stock.

•Bread: dinner rolls, croissants, hamburger and hotdog buns.

•Spaghettis sauce.

•Dried noodles (200 pounds).

•Onions.

•Bottled water.

•Bottled Gatorade.
