Robertsdale to host second clean-up day Saturday

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The City of Robertsdale and Revitalization Committee are inviting residents and businesses to participate in a little spring cleaning, hosting a clean-up day on Saturday, May 19.

This is the second clean-up day hosted by the city in which residents and businesses are invited to do things to spruce up, like painting and yard maintenance, or if they have any items that need to be picked up.

This is the second clean-up day hosted by the city. The first was held in October.

“I think we had good participation at last year’s fall cleanup,” said Revitalization Committee member Kay Arnette. “Hopefully, we’ll have some cooler weather and residents will be encouraged to get out and participate.”

The Revitalization Committee was formed following a meeting in Abbeville, attended by Mayor Charles Murphy, council representatives, and members of the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, last July.

After that, a presentation was made before the city council asking for help from the business community to seek ways to spruce up the downtown area to coincide with upgrades to Honeybee Park, which should be completed by the city’s Centennial in 2021.

The clean-up events, however, are open to all residents.

The Robertsdale City Council voted at its May 7 meeting to use the city’s digital billboard to advertise the event.

In other business May 7, the council voted to increase supplements for the city’s annual summer sports camps, which are put on by coaches from Robertsdale High School.

Camps include:

• A boys and girls soccer camp June 11-13 on the south side of the baseball complex at Garrett Park.

• A girls’ softball camp June 11-15 at the softball complex at Garrett Park.

• A boys and girls tennis camp June 18-20 at the city tennis complex on Silverhill Avenue.

• A boys’ baseball camp June 19-21 at the baseball complex at Garrett Park.

• A boys and girls basketball camp, June 25-27 in the gym at the old Robertsdale First Baptist Church.

• An offensive skills football camp July 9-11 on the south side of the baseball complex at Garrett Park.

• A defensive skills football camp July 23-25 on the south side of the baseball complex at Garrett Park.

• A girls’ cheerleader camp July 24-26 at the PZK Civic Center on Alabama 104.

Camps will also be held in the library at Robertsdale Elementary School, June 11-15, 18-22 and 25-29, and a dance camp will be held June 18-21 at DDC Studio in the Greer’s Shopping Center.

The council also voted to:

• Voted to contribute $2,700 to a county-wide drainage management plan with the Soil Conservation District.

• Voted to allow the Robertsdale Youth Football League to purchase up to $3,000 of equipment through the city.

• Donated $2,500 to the Robertsdale High School Golden Bear band.

• Renewed the city’s property and liability insurance with Blackmon Insurance.

• Approved the purchase of equipment for the city’s Public Works Department.

• Approved a request to solicit bids for sludge removal at the Waste Water Treatment Plant.

• Renewed the city’s advertisement in the Central Baldwin Magazine through the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce at a cost of $1,900.

• Approved a request from the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce to use the city’s digital billboard to advertise the Intro to Online Marketing seminar presented by Google, which will be held Thursday, May 17 at the Baldwin County Association of Realtors. The free seminar is hosted by the BCAR, area Chambers of Commerce, and America’s Small Business Development Centers.

• Adopted resolutions pertaining to the annual Municipal Water Pollution Prevention report.
