Trail crews work hard to reopen Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail system

Hurricane Sally took a toll on the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail system. Many trees came down, fencing and barriers were damaged and the trail surface sustained damage. While the trail was closed to human traffic the animal residents kept an eye on things.

Trail crews got to work quickly, clearing trees and debris, and were able to open Rattlesnake Ridge, Cotton Bayou, Rosemary Dunes and a portion of Catman Trail Oct. 3. Hidden Lake, Twin Bridges and Gulf Oak Ridge were opened Oct. 10.

Use caution while enjoying the trails as they have sustained damage and are not as smooth as usual. Trail crews still have work to do repairing railings and other areas.

Hugh S. Branyon backcountry trail complex is a network that includes 15 miles of trails that meander through six distinct ecosystems of Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Gulf State Park. The trail complex has something for everyone in the family. Go for a leisurely stroll, hike or bring your bikes.
