The owner of a Montgomery area towing company is facing first degree theft of property charges in Baldwin County after officials say he made off with a monitored vehicle on I-65 north of Bay Minette.

“Throughout the course of the year the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office noted an unusual trend of theft of disabled motor vehicles from the roadside of I-65,” according to a BCSO press release issued Tuesday.

On Nov. 13, the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division placed a monitored vehicle near the 41-mile marker, between the Bay Minette/Rabun and Rabun/Perdido exits of I-65.

On Friday, Nov. 17 the vehicle was taken from that location and was later located in neighboring Escambia County on the back of a “roll back" style tow truck, driven by Charles Randall Williams, 52, of Lapine.

Williams, who operates a towing company in Montgomery, was returned to Baldwin County, booked into the Corrections Facility and charged with first degree theft of property. Records show he was released the same day on a $7,500 bond.
