ROBERTSDALE, Alabama -- It will be a little bit country and a little bit back country when the Robertsdale Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization hosts Bluegrass on the Bayou from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22 in the multi-purpose room at the school.

The event will feature live music by Delta Reign and a catered dinner by Café Acadiana of Silverhill. Tickets will be sold in advance, $20 for adults, $10 for children 10 and under.

This event replaces the Wild Game Night fundraiser, which was first started by RES Principal Faye Sheppard when she was assistant principal at Central Baldwin Middle School and brought to RES when she became principal in 2010.

“It was just really hard to organize,” she said, “and you never knew if you were going to get enough of a variety of meat.”

By combining Bluegrass music with a catered Louisiana-style dinner, Sheppard said, it brings together the best of both worlds.

“Everybody loves Bluegrass,” she said, “and I know everybody loves Café Acadiana, so why not bring those two things together.”

In addition to music and dinner, Sheppard said, there will be a silent auction with baskets representing each classroom.

There will also be a Kids Zone, supervised by members of the RHS Naval Junior ROTC, in the Robertsdale Elementary gym, for school-aged children, featuring games, inflatables and pizza. Admission is $5 per child for the first two children, $2 for each additional child.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the construction of a special needs playground at the school.

“Right now we have a swing that special needs students can use, that was donated last year by the Robertsdale Rotary Club,” Sheppard said. “The rest of the equipment was brought over from the old school in 2010, and it was 10 years old then.”

It will cost approximately $150,000 to $200,000 to put in the necessary equipment and safety features for the playground, Sheppard said.

Tickets can be purchased through special needs teachers at the school, or from the front office. For more information call the school at 251-947-4003.
