Catholic Social Services gets 100 turkeys, plus sides for Thanksgiving meals

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Catholic Social Services received a special delivery on Monday, Nov. 25, just in time for Thanksgiving.

A local group donated 100 turkeys, plus all the sides to go with them, including boxed dressing and canned goods with gravy and a variety of vegetables for a complete Thanksgiving meal.

Debbie Schwoebel said she started donating to Catholic Social Services as part of the Fairhope Lions Club.

“When I left the Lions Club, I wanted to keep it going,” she said. With the help of friends, many of whom were still a part of the Lions Club, they have been able to increase the donation each season, hitting the century mark this year.

Sadly, she said, many of those who started the Thanksgiving tradition with her have passed on. This year’s donation is dedicated to one of those people, Bob McCray.

“I just feel like it’s our responsibility to make sure as many people as possible are able to enjoy a good Thanksgiving meal like we can,” Schwoebel said. “I’ve been able to keep it going with the help of friends and others who have donated.”

Schwoebel said she begins gathering donations for next year’s Thanksgiving soon after this Thanksgiving is over and welcomes any and all who wish to donate. If you’re interested, contact Schwoebel at 251-402-3785.
