City set to start summer camps in July

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — After nearly a month’s delay because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the city of Robertsdale will host its annual summer sports camps, put on by coaches from Robertsdale High School, beginning Monday, July 6.

All summer sports camps will follow guidelines for social distancing, sanitizing stations and hand wipes put forth by the Alabama High School Athletic Association, said Mayor Charles Murphy.

There will be additional changes to the camps because of coronavirus precautions, including change of venues for some of the camps to allow for further social distancing.

Because of concerns over a recent surge in cases, Murphy said, they will closely monitor declarations from Gov. Kay Ivey and could modify or cancel camps if necessary.

Camps include:

• Football camps July 7-9 for ages 5-8 and July 14-16 for ages 9-12. Both camps will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the south side of boys’ baseball complex at Garrett Park.

• A boys’ baseball camp from 9:30 to noon July 7-9 at the baseball complex at Garrett Park.

• Boys’ and girls’ tennis camp, 8 to 11 a.m. July 7-8 at city tennis courts on East Silverhill Avenue.

• Cross country camp for ages 6-12, 8 a.m. to noon July 14-16 at the south entrance to Honeybee Park.

• A girls’ softball camp 8 to 11 a.m. July 15-16 at the softball complex at Garrett Park.

• Boys’ and girls’ basketball camp from 9 a.m. to noon July 16-18 in the gym at Central Christian School on Alabama 104.

• A girls’ cheerleader camp from 9 to 11 a.m. July 21-22 at the Robertsdale Fire Station on St. Paul Street.

Camps normally scheduled to be held in the library at Robertsdale Elementary School have been moved to the PZK Hall to allow for social distancing, Murphy said.

Each camp will be from 9 a.m. to noon for ages 6-9 and 1 to 4 p.m. for ages 10-12 and will include:

• July 6-10: Around the World Fun.

• July 20-24: Science Fun for Everyone.

• July 27-31: Fun Crafts for Summer.
