Volunteers and members of Boy Scout Troop 47 of Fairhope spent Sunday digging test holes several feet deep on the shores of Little Lagoon. The group is looking for evidence of activity there by ancient residents.

Harry King, a local archaeology buff, helped uncover the location of a 1,400 year old canal dug in the area by Native Americans. He said there is evidence that early people lived in a village along the shoreline.

“This is where they would have gathered for meals and to be together, parents, children, grandparents, just like we do today,” he said.

King will discuss the find during a meeting of the Baldwin County Genealogical Society on March 9 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Foley Public Library. The meeting is free and open to the public.
