Council approves bids for Honeybee Park improvements

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Robertsdale City Council awarded bids totaling nearly $1 million at its meeting Nov. 5 for Phase 1 of improvements to Honeybee Park.

Representatives from Adams Stewart, who presented conceptual design drawings to the council earlier this year, were present at the meeting. The council approved a bid of $949,500 for the project, along with $32,500 in administration fees and voted to exempt landscaping fees of $15,000.

Plans for park improvements include a pavilion to be located on the east side of the park, the addition of sidewalks, landscaping, additional parking, restroom facilities, and an increase in booth space for the annual Honeybee Festival which is held every year in October.

Plans are also underway for the removal and relocation of the city’s Utilities Barn. The area will be used for an amphitheater which will feature local entertainment, with additional parking and restroom facilities surrounding the structure.

The full project is scheduled for completion in time for the city’s Bicentennial Celebration, which is slated for 2021.

In other business Nov. 5, the council passed a resolution authorizing Civil Southeast to make a pre-application to ADEM for water system improvements.

According to the resolution, the city “is interested in applying under Alabama Department of Environmental Management’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund” program for water system improvements.

The council also voted to increase impact fees by $1,000 for three proposed new subdivisions in Robertsdale.

According to information provided by city engineer Greg Smith, “Due to the impact that new developments have on our sewer system’s capacity, it is recommended that the sewer tap fees … be increased by $1,000 so that improvements can be performed to the downstream sewer collection system.”

Impact fees would be increased for:

• Cottages of Aventura-Phase 3, 100 lots (29.5 acres).

• Cotton District PUD, 93 lots (38 acres).

• Ridgewood Place, 77 lots (59 acres).

“We have contacted all of the developers for these subdivisions and they have agreed to this,” Smith said. “It’s not like we’re just springing it on them.”

Also on Nov. 5, the council:

• Voted to allow the Robertsdale Rotary Club to use the Baldwin County Fairgrounds Arena for its annual rodeo March 8-9, 2019.

• Voted to allow the Robertsdale High School soccer team to use city facilities for practices while improvements are being made to J.D. Sellars Stadium.

• Reappointed Tiffaney Plato and Bob Sanders to the city’s Zoning Board of Adjustments.

• Renewed a sponsorship for the Central Christian Athletic Corporation for the school’s upcoming baseball program at a cost of $150.

• Authorized city engineer Greg Smith to solicit bids for the FY2016 sidewalk project, which will include sidewalk construction on Krchak and Palmer streets.

• Approved an intergovernmental service agreement for use of voting machines for the 2020 elections.

• Approved the purchase of two vehicles for the Robertsdale Police Department.
