Councils make quick work of December meetings

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama -- The Robertsdale City Council and Silverhill Town Council both made quick work of respective regular meetings Monday, Dec. 4.

The Robertsdale City Council voted to renew a lease agreement with the Baldwin County Board of Education to use city property for storage.

The 24-month lease agreement calls for the Board of Education to lease 20,000 square feet of space on the property, which is located off of Fairgrounds Road behind Robertsdale High School, at a cost of $2 per square foot. With additional fees, the total cost per year would be $41,000, said Mayor Charles Murphy.

Formerly part of Diamond Growers, the city purchased the property, which includes 25 acres and 65,000 square feet of storage buildings with a scale and loading dock facilities, in March of 2014. There is currently 48,000 square feet of storage space available on the property, Murphy said.

In other business Dec. 4 in Robertsdale, the council:

•Voted to allow St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and School to use the city’s digital billboard to promote a “Fajita Cookoff” fundraiser on Dec. 10.

•Voted to allow the Baldwin Pops to use the Baldwin County Coliseum for a concert April 15 and agreed to provide a stage for the concert at a cost of up to $2,000.

In Silverhill Dec. 4, the council clarified the cost of purchase for a vehicle for the town’s police department.

At its Nov. 6 meeting, the council voted to approve the purchase of an F150 Crew Cab 4 x 4 from Stivers Ford Lincoln in Montgomery as part of the state bid contract.

According to minutes presented at the meeting, the cost to purchase the vehicle, $28,737, did not include additional costs for equipment of $8,949 and graphics of $585. There was also an additional cost of a cage for transportation of prisoners, which would increase the price by $1,000.

The council approved the total purchase of $38,271 at its Nov. 20 meeting, along with the additional purchase of a cage for the vehicle.

A clarification was made at the Dec. 4 meeting and approved by the council.

The council also again tabled consideration of hiring Scott Poole as a part-time training coordinator and administrative assistant for the police department.

Poole is set to retire from the Federal Bureau of Investigations office in Mobile in December and, Silverhill Police Chief Kevin Brock said at the Nov. 20 meeting that Poole is looking to continue working part-time in law enforcement after his retirement.

Council members expressed concern as to whether or not there was money in the budget to hire Poole. Mayor Tim Wilson asked that the matter be tabled in order to see if something could be worked out.
