Foley Middle School 2017 STEAM Camp

FOLEY - Students participated in an 8-day STEAM Camp program that focused on the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math behind amusement parks. Students were challenged to use the engineering design process to build several models, including a roller coaster using pipe insulation, a water slide, and CO2 dragsters. Students had the opportunity to show off their artistic side by helping to create the camp shirt logo. Students then screen printed the logo onto their own shirt. Students also created model hot air balloons, as well as amusement park inspired shrinky-dinks and watercolor paintings. Students expanded their learning by traveling to the Naval Aviation Museum where they viewed planes from across the decades to see how the engineering designs changed over time. While at the museum the students were able to view the Magic of Flight, where the Blue Angels discuss the science behind flying a F/A -18 and how the body reacts to the G-forces when flying Navy fighter jets. Students also traveled to the local pool where they could try their hand at racing underwater ROV’s. Camp culminated with a trip to the newly opened OWA park in Foley, where students got to experience real roller coasters and to see all the new information they had learned about the physics behind roller coasters in action. STEAM Camp Leaders and educators at Foley Middle School include: Ashley McNair, Cain Harbin, Clint Boutte, Marie Smyly, and Thomas Thorjusen.
