FOLEY - Are you interested in becoming a Friend of the Foley Library and assisting during the 2019/2020 year? Don’t miss out on the annual membership meeting taking place on Thur., Sept. 26 at 11:30 a.m. To accommodate more members, this year’s meeting will be held at the Foley Civic Center and will include a catered luncheon that is free to members. Members may join at the door. A brief meeting will be held to ratify the 2019-2020 officers of the Friends of the Foley Library Board of Directors. Those who wish to attend can RSVP to Membership Chairman Ellen Ward via email at ellenwardyuma@gmail.com or by phone at 251-233-5102.

The speaker for the Annual Meeting will be Foley Public Library Director John Jackson, who became director in 2014 and has since worked to make the library a crucial element in the community.

“We get to do a lot more things than just check out books, such as lots of activities and community events,” Jackson said. “The things we do here, the community service and patron-oriented service, is what I have always been involved in since I became involved with libraries.”

September is also time to renew current memberships for the upcoming season. Renewal forms can be picked up at the library, and dues and completed forms can be turned in during the event, delivered in person to the library, or mailed to the Friends of the Foley Public Library (319 East Laurel Avenue, Foley AL 36535.) Members are asked to be involved in one or more of the volunteer activities needed by the library, including: Service as an Officer/Board Member; Membership Committee; Book Sale Clerk (two hours a month); Book Sorting; Book Sale - Transport (truck needed, once a year); Book Store Clerk (three hours a month); Book Sale Set-Up (three hours, once a year.)

Personal Membership Levels are: $5 Student; $10 Individual; $15 Family; $25 Sponsor; $50-$99 Booster; $100-$499 Patron.

The Foley Public Library, which has consistently been recognized for excellence over the years, was named a top-ranking library for its size in 1996, recognized as a Gold Level Standards recipient by the Alabama Library Association beginning in 2015 and onwards, and was recently ranked one of the top ten libraries in the United States in its category based on findings by Library Journal in 2018. Rankings are based on income levels and levels of per capita service and involvement by the community. The Foley Public Library has received a 5 Star rating from Library Journal and a ranking of one of the top ten libraries in the United States in its category for three years in a row.
