Hamburg Building gets Visioning Workshop

Posted

Through April 3 - 5, a team of professionals put together by Design AL visited Foley to discuss and design future ideas for the Hamburg building located on Rose Avenue in downtown. The team was brought together after city officials submitted a grant to the Alabama Historical Commission concerning the Hamburg building, which was donated to the city by the Hamburg family at the end of 2017.

The team consisted of architects, landscape architects, graphic designers, and industrial designers who came together to throw out ideas and sketches of potential futures for the Hamburg building. While the city wants to leave the building, originally a potato shed and store, true to its roots, the funds needed to get the building operational will be high. Due to this, the city wants to create a building that is both economically viable while also community-oriented.

On April 3 a visioning workshop was held and was attended by the Design AL team along with many members of the city and the community, including members of the Hamburg family. Together, the groups walked through the Hamburg building, coming together at the end to design potential ideas of what could go into the building and what they felt the town would like to see.

April 4 was for the design teams as they looked at all the suggestions and ideas brought forth the previous day, and on April 5 a public event was held showing the final results of the visioning workshop. Design AL revealed potential plans to have a café/retail shop in the front part of the building, with the back space reserved for community events or to be rented out for reunions and possibly weddings. The outside space will be reserved for community events such as concerts.

Now, taking back all the feedback and designs, the team will continue to work on a proposal to be sent to the City of Foley to review. Afterwards, the designs can be used to acquire grants to help renovate the Hamburg building and bring it back as a working part of the community.
