Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation cancels this year’s rodeo

FOLEY - The Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation has announced that this year’s rodeo has been canceled. The decision was made after much deliberation from the foundation’s staff, board of directors, PeerHelpers Program Coordinators, and Peer Helpers. In light of the recent extension of the “safer at home” orders by Governor Kay Ivey, the foundation feels canceling the event is the best decision during the current pandemic.

“Canceling the rodeo was most definitely a decision our executive board of directors didn’t take lightly, considering that it has been the main fundraiser for the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation for the past 22 years and so many throughout our community look forward to attending it with their families each year,” said Co-Founder & Chairman Frances Holk-Jones. “However, following the increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus and in line with recent “safer at home” orders by Governor Kay Ivey, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. The safety of all attendees, volunteers, and contestants remains our top priority.”

The 23rd Annual JCMF Professional Rodeo was scheduled to take place Aug. 6 - 8 at the City of Foley Horse Arena. The event is the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation’s major fundraiser of the year and supports the foundation’s PeerHelpers program within schools.

According to the release, “The Foundation is fully aware of the rising mental health needs in our community and is taking this opportunity to focus our attention on the 20-21 school year.”

With the rise in virtual learning and potential guidelines that will be in place once students return to school, the foundation is developing more tools and resources to better benefit the students in Baldwin County.

“With your support, we can continue our mission of providing youth with the knowledge, resources, and confidence to successfully navigate the pressures of day-to-day life issues and excel into adulthood,” the release states.

The PeerHelpers program which the rodeo benefits was designed to help students learn how to handle situations at-risk students may face, including how to identify and approach these students, support them, and when to take a situation to an adult. The program consists of two components that address Tier1 and Tier2 of the School-Based Mental Health Model. Tier1 is addressed through the K-12 all student prevention curriculum called P.A.T.H. - Prevention & Awareness for Total Health. Tier2 focuses on identifying and supporting at-risk students through the peer-to-peer support component PeerHelpers.

Those who would like to make a financial contribution to support the PeerHelpers Program or anyone interested in becoming a JCMF annual sponsor can do so online at https://jennifermoorefoundation.com/donate/.
