Magnolia Springs discusses restarting committee meetings, town business

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS - The Town of Magnolia Springs has begun the reopening process, taking safety precautions into consideration as it moves forward.

The Magnolia Springs Public Library is reopening with regular hours, but a limited number of patrons are allowed inside at a time. Masks are required at all times within the library.

Within Town Hall, a sneeze guard has been installed in front of the clerk’s window, and entering Town Hall requires an appointment. Appointments can be set up via phone or email. An outside drop box has also been installed for payments and documents. Anyone entering Town Hall is required to wear a mask at this time. A complete reopening of Town Hall will be decided at a later date.

While some committees have begun meeting again, including the Planning Commission, others will resume come July.

At this time, the Community Association is still planning to go forward with the Annual Fourth of July Parade.

Other business discussed by the council includes:

  • The council has been working for months towards repairs on the town bridge, and is currently awaiting a contract for review from the contractor. The total cost is currently estimated around $40 - $42 thousand, and council hopes to have the contract by next month to discuss moving forward. The town has appropriated $50,000 in the budget for this project. Repairs will include restriping the bridge, fixing part of the bridge where the concrete meets the bridge, and applying tape on several speed humps to create higher visibility.
  • Concerns were voiced regarding the dumpster located in town. Councilmember Steve Mobley stated many people were leaving contents outside the dumpster once it had reached capacity. The items left on the ground surrounding the dumpster are not picked up, creating an issue. Mobley spoke with the town deputy, but if there are no visuals of who is leaving the items on the ground then nothing can be done to issue warnings. The dumpster in question are emptied weekly. The town has decided to contact the county to discuss the possibility of emptying the dumpster twice a week.
  • Town council is currently working closely with Baldwin County Sewer Service representatives to create a franchise agreement between the two entities. Both parties are interested in making the agreement a possibility, and are working to create something that will be in the best interest for both. This includes taking into heavy consideration Oak Street and Magnolia River. Currently, councilmembers are reviewing the previous suggested franchise agreements alongside the currently suggested agreement. Once council and legal counsel have reviewed the documents, a meeting will be held between Magnolia Springs and BCSS to further discuss the potential agreement.
