Memorial ride raises $1,700 for scholarship fund

STAPLETON, Alabama -- The Fire and Iron Motorcycle Club Station 1001 hosted its annual event on May 18 at the Stapleton Volunteer Fire Department. The purpose of this event is to raise funds for the Martha Ann Hinton Memorial Scholarship.

Hinton, a long time Baldwin County teacher, (retired) was tragically killed by a drunk driver in 2013. This scholarship was set up by her family as a way to keep her memory alive with school students.

Steve Williams the president of Station 1001, at the time, began holding an annual motorcycle ride as a way to help raise funds for this scholarship. Sadly, Williams died last year and with his passing the group wanted to honor him as well and this was done by renaming the ride.

This year the first Steve “Power” Williams Memorial Rummy Run was held benefitting the Hinton Scholarship and raising $1,700.

There are a great many to thank for making this event a success; from the ones that participated in the event to the following businesses that donated items for our door prizes, auction items, helped with advertising and more: Allstate Insurance – Bill Boulton Agency, Campbell’s Hardware, Camping World, City of Robertsdale, Big Board – Fred Wilson, Fiddler Farms, Furniture City, Gentleman’s Barber Shop, Goo Roo’s, Med Care/Air Care One, Middleton Auto Parts, NAPA (Georgetown), OWA, Paradise Marine, Trendz Hair Salon, Willy T’s and many more.

This year the “ride” was a rummy run and without the help of the following fire departments this event would not have happened. A huge thank you to Stapleton Volunteer Fire Department, Chief Tim Pouncey and his crew, for hosting this event, Gateswood Volunteer Fire Department, Elsanor Volunteer Fire Department, Loxley Volunteer Fire Department and Robertsdale Volunteer Fire Department and those that manned their stations for riders to have a place for a break and tour their facilities.
