Senior Women’s Open headed to Baldwin County

FAIRHOPE, Ala. - The USGA has selected Lakewood Golf Course as the site of its 59th Senior Women’s Amateur Championship scheduled for Sept. 10-15, 2021. The event, originally scheduled for 2020, was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 2021 Championship marks the third USGA event held at Point Clear’s legendary links at the beautiful Marriott Grand Hotel in Baldwin County. Prior events include the 1974 and 1986 U. S. Senior Women’s Amateurs.

Opened in 1947, Lakewood is the oldest golf links in Baldwin County. The historical facility is now a member of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and, through the years, has hosted many star studded events attracting captains of industry and politics; stars of movie, television, and stage; plus a host of sports legends and notable musicians. That includes Colin Powell, Margaret Thatcher, Barbara Bush and Dolly Parton.

The Championship will be held on the recently remodeled Dogwood course with a field of 132 players who earn entry through nationwide sectional qualifying or an exemption category. Golfers compete in two rounds of stroke play, after which the field is cut to the low 64 scorers for match play.

“Hosting a USGA national championship is a great honor,” commented Niall Fraser, Lakewood’s Director of Golf, “and we welcome the opportunity to open our doors to some of the world’s top golfers. Our club is committed to making the 59th tournament a memorable event for all involved. It’s a dream come true.”

Entries for the 2021 Women’s Championship open in the spring of 2021.
