ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The George P. Thames Adult Activity Center in Robertsdale hosted teams from Baldwin and Mobile counties in double dominoes on Wednesday, June 5.
Qualifiers advance to this year’s Alabama Masters Games, which will be held Oct. 7-10 in Valley.
A total of 13 teams competed for the right to advance, including teams from Robertsdale, Orange Beach, Mobile, Chickasaw and Saraland. Teams of two qualify in various age groups with the age of the younger team member determining the age group, said Vivian Barton, who coordinated the event for the South Alabama Regional Planning Commission.
Teams competed in best-of-3 tournament-style play with a one-hour time limit.
According to the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission Website, the Masters Games of Alabama is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for active adults age 50 and over through social, mental and physical activities.
They were developed in Oxford in 1989 to provide adults age 50 and above an opportunity to maintain an active lifestyle by participating in a variety of events. Each year, between 600 and 800 participants and volunteers from across the state participate in the games.
The games are sponsored statewide by the Area Agency on Aging.
The Thames Center is part of District 7, which includes Baldwin, Mobile, Escambia, Conecuh, Washington, Choctaw, Clarke, Wilcox and Monroe counties. Participants also attend locally from Orange Beach, Saraland, Chickasaw and Mobile.
The Thames Center serves Robertsdale, Loxley and Silverhill in Central Baldwin. They also have participants from Fairhope, Gulf Shores, Elberta and Malbis.
Locally, qualifying for this year’s Masters Games began in April. Qualifiers are held for basketball free throw, Frisbee toss, horseshoes, Nerfball toss, softball throw, billiards, shuffleboard, table tennis, checkers, Rook, double and single dominoes and bowling.
