Town seeks grant for playground resurfacing project

SILVERHILL, Alabama — The Town of Silverhill is looking to apply for a grant through the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for playground surfacing improvements.

The town council passed a resolution at its regular meeting Oct. 2 to apply for the grant through ADEM’s Scrap Tire Marketing Program.

The resolution was necessary, along with authorization for Civil Southeast to proceed with completing the grant application for funding.

According to information provided to the town by Civil Southeast, ADEM will review the application and, if approved, the town will have one year to utilize the funds and make Kid’s Park improvements.

All work will be done by town employees and once the work is completed, Civil Southeast will assist the town with the reimbursement process.

The resolution was passed unanimously by the town council with one council member, Wayne Gruenloh, not present.

In other business Oct. 2, the council passed an Ordinance amending a previous ordinance to change the council work session time to 5:30 p.m. with the council meeting time changed to 6 p.m., a half-hour earlier than previously established. The council will continue to meet on the first and third Monday of every month. The ordinance will take affect with the Oct. 16 meeting.

The council also continued discussions to amend the permitted uses in the town zoning book submitted to the council by the planning and zoning board but no action on the measure was taken at the Oct. 2 meeting.

The council also discussed running water lines for developing property on East Boulevard. Utilities Superintendent Scottie Smith said total cost for running water line on the proposed property is $44,000. Council member Jared Lyles said he was for paying some, but not all of the cost. No action was taken at the Oct. 2 meeting.

In other action Oct. 2, the council voted to:

• Pass a resolution closing the Regions Bank checking account for the Silverhill Volunteer Fire Department. Funds totaling $6,526.28 would be deposited into the SHVFD’s Citizens’ Bank account.

• Renew sponsorships for Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce events for 2018.

• Approve advertising on the Chamber website for the Silverhill Community Center and Little Hall at a costs of $100 per year and $25 for set up.
