Volunteering is the first step in making a difference

I enjoyed reading your excellent front-page story and OpEd on "Saving America's Amazon," in the May 14, 2021, issue of The Baldwin Times. This should be required reading for every citizen in Mobile and Baldwin Counties. Ben Raines' mission to educate and motivate local folks to care about and get involved in saving our treasured "Mobile-Tensaw River Delta is an extremely important one.

It is all fine and good to take a boat trip and walk in our parks, but a good starting point is watching Ben Raines' documentary, "America's Amazon." That is what inspired me to get involved with the Sierra Club and Mobile Baykeeper. In a recent PBS documentary, "Spiritual Audacity," about the work of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and his book, "The Prophets," he discussed that the original meaning of "prophets" meant truth teller. Ben Raines is a modern-day prophet/truth teller: it's a hard, lonely job.

If you feel a calling to join the cause in honor of Ben Raines and for "Endangered Species Day," which was May 21, 2021, join the Alabama-at-Large Chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL) from the comfort of your home on Saturday, June 5, 2021, (World Environment Day), at noon in a Zoom, virtual meeting. We will be discussing the upcoming virtual CCL National Lobby Day, on June 12, 2021, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST, and practice using the En-ROADs climate interactive.

Volunteering is the first step in making a difference. Contact Alabama Regional Coordinator, Henry Slack, at henry.h.slack@gmail.com or me, rivafralickoh@gmail.com. Thank you again for making climate issues a priority in your newspapers: you all are also "prophets."
