Watson wins Wharf’s first scholarship contest

Kamiya Watson — a senior enrolled in Baldwin County’s Virtual School — was awarded the first-ever Wharf Scholarship in the amount of $10,000.

“We are proud to announce Kamiya as the recipient of The Wharf’s 2021 Scholarship,” said Kristen Hammack, management team leader, The Wharf. “The Wharf is based on fun and family so when we established this award, we were excited to invest in future leaders and families in Baldwin County. We were amazed at the number of applicants who had accomplished so much in such a short time and many students who have already experienced a hardship or challenge in their life, yet they to continue on with such positive attitudes.

“All the applicants are heavily involved in this community and have given back to those in need while maintaining their studies to ensure a bright future for themselves. This decision was not made lightly. We were so impressed with the achievements and abilities of those that applied, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”

Watson currently holds a 4.0 GPA and has been a member of various clubs and organizations such as Project Outreach, Peer Helpers, Student Advisory Council and the Daphne Diversity Club. She also volunteers at the American Autism & Rehabilitation Center, babysits and works at a local food establishment in Daphne.

“Kamiya is a very intelligent and a diligent student. She is an incredibly hard worker who has prioritized academic achievement throughout her high school career — truly a model student,” said Katherine Robinson, AP World History Teacher at Daphne High School. “She is smart, driven and empathetic, and I really do believe that Kamiya possesses the skills to change the world for the better.”

Watson was selected among 112 other applicants vying for the award that was announced in January as part of a newly developed charity giving campaign named, “The Wharf’s Anchor Campaign: #AnchorForCommunity.” Students across Baldwin County were eligible to receive the award that was evaluated based on community involvement, academic achievement and their response to a written essay from three provided prompts.

She plans to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham and work hard to become the first member of her family to receive a four-year degree.

Applications for The Wharf’s 2022 Scholarship will open in January 2022. For more information on The Wharf or The Wharf’s Anchor Campaign, please visit alwharf.com.
