Daphne to reopen Senior Center

DAPHNE – The Daphne Senior Center will begin to reopen Monday, May 2, after being closed for more than a year during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Ange Baggett, director of events and marketing, told City Council members on Monday, April 19, that with the changes in state restrictions, the city is preparing to reopen the facility.

“We will plan to reopen on Monday, May 2,” Baggett said. “We are starting with the Fitness Center. This will not impact the food program. We will continue to serve those meals curbside and by home delivery and we are taking all precautions.”

Baggett said staff members will continue to take precautions to protect center guests from the coronavirus and other diseases.

“We will do a deep clean before we open and we are plans to clean the facility on a daily basis and keep our seniors safe,” Baggett said. “But we are excited about being able to offer those programs again.”

The Senior Center and other Daphne facilities were closed by the city on March 20, 2020 under the orders of Gov. Kay Ivey’s “Safer At Home,” directive. City Hall was reopened in January following renovations to protect municipal employees and visitors.

The Daphne Senior Center is located at 2605 U.S. 98.

The Fitness Center’s regular hours are from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The facility is closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Spanish Fort officials are also looking at reopening city facilities closed since the outbreak of COVID-19. At a meeting of the Spanish Fort City Council on Friday, April 23, Mayor Mike McMillan said municipal staff members will prepare a plan for reopening.

“If this council wants to start moving forward and opening up our facilities, I need a heads-up. So we can really start looking at the individual things, what we have to do so I can come back to y'all with a plan,” McMillan said.
