Foley High School seniors enjoy graduation ceremony

FOLEY - After months of uncertainty, Foley High School seniors were able to enjoy their high school graduation on Monday, June 1. The 2020 class, which saw 454 seniors graduating, accumulated more than $5.5 million in scholarships.

“High School has blessed us with memories that will last us a lifetime, and we are so blessed to be a part of such a diverse school, class, and community,” said Senior Class President Kaitlyn Knight. “As we celebrate this early milestone in our life and embark on a new journey, remember this year has already shown us how capable we are of accomplishing our goals when we commit ourselves to them.”

For 2020, Foley High School graduated over 90 percent of its seniors for the schoolyear, which hasn’t happened in approximately 40 through 50 years, said Principal Russ Moore. Due to the late graduation, many seniors have already left for basic training or been deployed, and Moore asked for a round of applause for the students who missed the ceremony.

For the senior gift, Senior Class Secretary Hannah Daniel presented a check of $750 to Magnolia Elementary Principal PJ Sute to go towards building an outdoor classroom.

“We went through thick and thin this year,” Daniel said prior to the presentation. “For a long time we had no idea whether or not we would get the opportunity to even attend a graduation ceremony. In the beginning of this tragedy, the uncertainty of our future made things difficult to understand. We felt robbed of what was supposed to be one of the best years of our life. Over time however we started getting answers, and as we gained those answers our hopes rose high. One thing I’ve taken from this time is that our class is genuinely something special. We’ve overcome uncertainty and gained perseverance … The only thing greater than our strength as a class is the untapped potential that this generation has to change this world for the better.”
