Foley Woman’s Club donates to local charities

FOLEY - Every year, the Foley Woman’s Club raises money for multiple local women and children’s charities through its annual fundraiser, The Mad Hatter’s Event. The event is held in March, and through ticket sales, a silent auction, and donations, the club raises the funds that it then distributes to representatives from each charity during the October meeting.

This year, the meeting was held on Mon., Oct. 7, and donations were made to 13 organizations, with two more checks ready to hand out in the future at next year’s Mad Hatter’s Event.

“This is the club’s favorite meeting because we get to hand out the money that we worked so hard for at the Mad Hatter’s Event. Every single member contributed to this donation,” said 2019-20 Club President Kelly Barrett. The 2019 event raised a record-breaking $22,000 to go towards donations.

This year, the money went to the following organizations: The Baldwin County Heritage Museum, where the money will be used to help continue the museum staff’s mission of protecting and preserving the history of Baldwin County; The Alabama Sheriff’s Boys Ranch, to help fund education; Liberty Church Backpack Program, which was able to feed 150 children during 2019 and will continue to feed more hungry children with the money donated; KLAAS Kids, which will use the money to both help install a new motor in its K9 training boat and towards education on keeping children safe and away from trafficking situations; Foley Elementary School Library, to purchase new books for the children to keep them reading; Friends of Graham Creek Nature Preserve, to be put towards children’s activities at the preserve and to help with purchases of outdoor classroom supplies; Foley Public Library’s Children’s Program, to be put towards additional Capstone eBooks and the Autism Spectrum Disorder Unit of the library; Foley Middle School, to go towards the eBook program along with the Foley Public Library to make more books available to the students; Snook Youth Club, to go towards helping purchase a new bus for the club to take the children on character-building and fun field trips throughout the year; Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation, to continue training the more than 1200 students in the Peer Helpers Program to learn how to listen and talk with fellow students who are going through a difficult time or situation; St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where the money will be used for programs to feed hungry children both locally and internationally; Ecumenical Ministries, to be put towards helping fund families in the community who are dealing with an emergency crisis and need aid paying monthly bills such as rent or mortgage; and Foley Middle School’s Project REACH, a first-time recipient of the donation, which provides a safe and nurturing environment for children with autism in the school and to provide extra sensory help for these students.

With the record-breaking funds raised, the Foley Woman’s Club has decided to give away two $2,500 scholarships to graduating Foley seniors, which will be handed out on March 18, 2020, at next year’s Mad Hatter’s Event, themed World of Books. Be on the lookout for future information concerning the event. The Foley Woman’s Club meets the first Monday of each month at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Foley.
