FOLEY - During the Foley Woman’s Club’s Oct. 4 meeting, members were excited to once more do what they love to do - support local women and children’s charities and nonprofits. Each year the club holds its annual fundraiser, the Mad Hatters’ Event, and funds raised through ticket sales, silent auction items and raffle tickets are later donated to local charities in Baldwin County. The event was unable to take place in 2020 due to COVID-19, but returned during May of 2021 to raise over $15,000.
“This is the club’s favorite meeting of the year, this is the one we strive to have,” said Kelly Barrett, club president. “It gets to show attention for all the hard work that we have done. With the help of every single club member, this year our Mad Hatters’ Event raised over $15,000 in one day, which is great considering the pandemic shutdown, so we were extremely pleased … It was a doubly hard effort this year you might say, because everything that we did the year before we had to undo and then redo, so it was a lot of work.”
This year, nine recipients received a combined total of $13,500. The rest of the funds will be held for emergency situations, such as those faced last year when donations were made to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center and Ecumenical Ministries.
This year’s donation recipients were: the Baldwin County Heritage Museum, Ecumenical Ministries, Foley Public Library, Foley Boys & Girls Club (formerly Snook Youth Club), the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation, Foley Middle School’s Project REACH, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where the club meets monthly, Baldwin County CARE House, and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Boys Ranch.
Next year’s Mad Hatters’ Event will be themed “Going For The Green,” keeping in line with collecting as much funds as possible to go towards local charities as well as going green to save the planet. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at the Foley Civic Center with doors opening at 10 a.m. and the program beginning at 11:30 a.m. Tickets will go on sale in December.
The Foley Woman’s Club meets the first Monday of the month at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (501 North Pine Street, Foley). Full membership is $20 annually, with full members committing to help with the Mad Hatters’ Event, attend monthly meetings, serve on a refreshment committee once a year and bring a dish to the May Spring Luncheon. An associate membership is $20 annually. Associate members share the club’s objectives but may not be able to attend monthly meetings or participate in events due to scheduling conflicts. Associate members can attend monthly meetings and help when able with events, but may not vote, hold office or chair a committee.
