FOLEY - The Foley Woman’s Club kicked off the new year by welcoming Foley Police Department’s K9 Unit to its first 2020 meeting. Officer Carlos Lizarraga and his unit brought canine team members Titan and Nico to demonstrate to the club some of the unit’s tasks, from sniffing out narcotics to biting. Foley officers in the K9 unit purchase untrained dogs and go through the training courses together, forming a bond with their canine partner. Basic training alone lasts three to four months.

February will see the Foley Woman’s Club’s Annual BINGO and Baskets meeting, taking place on Monday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church (508 North Pine Street, Foley). The meeting will feature fun games of BINGO as well as showcase the baskets put together by club members to be auctioned off during the 15th Annual Mad Hatters’ Event on March 18.

The annual event is held at the Foley Civic Center, and doors will open at 10 a.m. Last year’s event raised $22,000 in one day, monies which were then donated to multiple women and children organizations in our area. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event go to these organizations, and the club is looking to break 2019’s record.

This year’s theme will be World of Books, with tickets going for $25. Bo Grant, lead singer of The Platters, will provide entertainment, and attendees can enjoy a silent auction, gift raffles, a fashion show, $500 Pot-of-Gold, and of course, the famous hat parade and hat contest. Categories for the contest include “Most Creative Theme,” “Wackiest,” and “Most Glamourous.”
