Gulf Shores Police Department announced the loss of retired K9 Officer Nanuk May 12, in a Facebook post.

Nanuk joined the Gulf Shores Police department in 2013. The 5-year-old dark sable German Shepherd came to Gulf Shores Police Department as an experienced and proven police dog. He was certified as a Patrol Dog and Narcotics Detection Dog through the United States Police Canine Association. His patrol duties included searching for felony suspects and tracking.

Nanuk served the Gulf Shores community with Command Sergeant Joe Taylor for five years. Due to health issues he retired Jan. 29, 2018. His remaining days were spent with Taylor and his family.

Nanuk will be missed by all who had the privilege to know him. The Gulf Shores Police Department would like everyone to please keep the Taylor family in your prayers during this difficult time.
