Jesse Owen Stimpson

Posted

Jesse Owen Stimpson lived 96 years in Fairhope, except during World War II. His parents would not allow him to quit school to go to war. After graduation from the Organic School (where he excelled in sports earning a scholarship for basketball to Springhill College) he joined the United States Navy. Owen served on Submarines USS S-28 (lost at sea), USS Bullhead (lost at sea), and USS Brill. Owen met and married a Navy Wave, Dorothy, his future partner of 58 years. They returned to Fairhope and raised 4 children. Owen was a master carpenter and built many houses and businesses in Fairhope and surrounding areas. Although not quite ambidextrous, Owen could hammer and saw, pitch and bat with either hand. This caused enough trouble to the other ball team that the game was stopped, and the rules were checked, and he was allowed to do either! Owen was preceded in death by his Parents, Jesse Owen “Buck” Stimpson Sr. and Eunice K. Stimpson; Sister, Laura Dees; Brother, George Carl “Big Boy” Stimpson; and his wife, Dorothy Stimpson. He is survived by his children, Sandy Stimpson, Coker, AL, George (Julie McCarroll) Stimpson, Toronto, Canada, Sherry (Bill) Frost, Fairhope, AL., and Jeffrey Stimpson, Bay Minette, AL.; niece, Donna (Barry) Nix, Fairhope, AL. and their children, Josh and Kyle.

Owen lived a long and healthy life. He passed away from natural causes under hospice care on Wednesday, August 12, 2020. He requested to be cremated with his ashes scattered in Fish River, where he swam and enjoyed the ferry crossing during his youth. He picked this spot and jokingly said for years “so the devil won’t have as far to come up and get me!” His wishes are being honored by family. Owen had a wonderful outlook on life and a contagious smile. He said “a smile is one thing I have to give away, it is free, and it makes other people happy”. Dance in Heaven Dad and keep smiling. We love you.
