Exit Stage Left will host its first kids’ summer theater camp in July.
The organization, which was opened this year by theater veteran Chase S. Morrisette and several friends, plans to offer acting classes and productions for both adults and children, as well as classes in other aspects of theater such as and stage design and script writing.
The summer camp will reflect all of those initiatives as the students works together to perform a production of the musical, Madagascar.
“What sets us apart is that this camp is being instructed by professionals in the industry,” Morrisette said.
Morrisette, said a centerpiece of Exit Stage Left is that the organization strives to be a safe place that is inclusive of all people.
“We don’t discriminate against anyone, especially kids with learning disabilities,” Morrisette said, adding that he encourages children with learning disabilities to try theater.
“There are countless studies about how much theater and being in this environment really helps children with learning disabilities, social anxiety, studying and reading,” he said. “They learn skills that help better themselves.”
Morrisette added that children who are nervous about being on stage do not have to act to be part of a theater family.
“We have a place for everybody. They can stage manage, make costumes and sets. There is always a place for everyone,” he said.
To that end the camp will not focus solely on acting and rehearsing. Jude McCoy, CEO of Exit Stage Left, said the camp will be interactive and busy as the campers learn all the components of stage craft.
“It will be very active and fun. We will hit all the traditional camp activities and not just spend all day rehearsing,” he said.
Camp will be held July 19 -23 at Graham Creek Nature Center in Foley from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For early and late drop off options contact the camp organizers. Cost is $150 per camper. Last day to register is June 30.
